In a public notice issued amid growing concern over the unrest, the department said it was keeping a close watch on developments across Shillong and closely monitoring any issues that could affect visitors and tourists.
“The safety and well-being of everyone visiting Meghalaya remains a priority,” the department said, urging tourists and visitors requiring assistance or information to reach out to the authorities.
The advisory comes a day after a KSU black-flag motorcycle rally turned violent in several parts of Shillong. Police said vehicles were damaged, people were assaulted and government property was targeted. Government vehicles were reportedly set ablaze, while statues of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were allegedly vandalised.
Three senior KSU leaders were subsequently arrested in connection with the violence, according to police.
The unrest has also triggered concern among visitors and prospective tourists, with questions being raised online about the safety of travelling to Shillong.
The Tourism Department said visitors could contact its toll-free helpline 1800-599-2026 for assistance or information.
The department’s message appears aimed at reassuring tourists that authorities are monitoring the situation while keeping visitor safety as a priority.
