Shillong, Nov 1: Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) Shillong has received a project grant from the National Innovation Foundation-India to document and preserve traditional knowledge, grassroots innovations and indigenous practices in Meghalaya, with a focus on West Jaintia Hills district.
The project aims to bring the centuries-old knowledge systems and biodiversity-related practices of Jaintia communities to national recognition while ensuring their preservation and promotion.
The research will be led by Dr Larilin Kharpuri as Principal Investigator, alongside Dr PC Laldingliani, Dr Pranjal Dubey and Mewanshanbor Lyngdoh as co-investigators. All four researchers are from MLCU’s Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems.
The study will focus on documenting traditional practices that remain largely unrecorded, particularly those relating to food, crafts, biodiversity, agriculture and veterinary care.
It will also examine challenges faced by local communities and explore potential solutions to sustain their cultural practices and indigenous knowledge systems.
