GUWAHATI, June 11: A tense standoff reportedly unfolded along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district after Bangladeshi authorities allegedly refused to accept a Bangladeshi national who was intercepted near the frontier, leaving the man stranded in no-man’s land and triggering heated exchanges between border forces.
The incident occurred in the Nandirchar sector near Mahendraganj, where personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were seen engaged in a face-off over the identity and nationality of the individual. Videos of the confrontation have since gone viral on social media.
According to BSF sources, the man, identified as 55-year-old Sati Rajbanshi of Chalna village in Bangladesh’s Rajshahi district, had entered Indian territory illegally through the Meghalaya border and was subsequently detained by the BSF.
However, Bangladeshi authorities allegedly refused to accept him when he was taken back towards the border, leading to a prolonged impasse.
The BSF said Rajbanshi is a Bangladeshi citizen and remains stranded in the border’s no-man’s land after a commander-level flag meeting between the BSF and BGB reportedly failed to resolve the issue.
The incident has sparked conflicting claims from the two sides.
While Bangladeshi authorities are reported to have questioned the individual’s identity and nationality, BSF sources alleged that BGB personnel had themselves attempted to push the man into Indian territory after picking him up from his village in Rajshahi.
“Bangladesh is trying to defame India. The BSF did not push back this person. Rather, BGB pushed him towards Indian territory. It appears that because he is a Hindu, he is being targeted by Bangladeshi authorities,” a BSF source alleged.
Officials said the man was intercepted after allegedly crossing into India without valid documents. The BSF maintained that he is a Bangladeshi national and that standard procedures were followed.
The episode comes amid heightened focus on illegal migration along India’s eastern frontier. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly stated that the state would intensify measures against undocumented Bangladeshi migrants in 2026, with authorities continuing efforts to identify and deport foreign nationals residing illegally.
BSF sources said similar disputes over nationality and pushbacks have been witnessed in other sectors along the India-Bangladesh border, including parts of West Bengal.
With negotiations yet to yield a breakthrough, the man continues to remain stranded in no-man’s land, underscoring the complexities surrounding cross-border migration, citizenship disputes and bilateral border management.
