Community comes together at Mawphlang sacred grove to celebrate Janjatiya Gaurav Divas

Shillong,  Nov 16: The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong, in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, College of Science & Commerce (CSC), Mawphlang, organised a special programme at the historic Mawphlang Sacred Grove on November 15  to mark Janjatiya Gaurav Divas and commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

The event drew enthusiastic participation from the local community, bringing together more than 100 attendees, including village leaders, youth groups, faculty members and students.

Mr. C. A. Lyngdoh, the Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang Lyngdohship, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Other dignitaries included the Rangbah Shnong of Mawphlang, Mr. J. Kharkongor (Principal, CSC Mawphlang), Dr. Saipari Sailo (Scientist D, ZSI Shillong), faculty from the College of Science & Commerce, and representatives of the youth community.

The programme was anchored by Dr. Bankerdonbor Kharbisnop, Head of the Department of Zoology, CSC Mawphlang, who welcomed the gathering and set the tone for the event. Proceedings began with a badge ceremony, followed by a welcome address from Dr. S. Kharbhih, Head of the Department of Botany, CSC Mawphlang. Students of the college presented a welcome song to mark the celebration.

Speakers highlighted the significance of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in honouring India’s tribal heritage, recognising the traditional knowledge systems of indigenous communities and their contributions to nation-building. They also underscored the importance of sacred groves as living heritage sites and vital repositories of biodiversity.

The programme concluded with an interactive session with community members, focusing on the cultural and ecological importance of the Mawphlang Sacred Grove and the shared responsibility to protect these ecological treasures for future generations.
