Imphal, June 1: In a significant escalation of anti-insurgency operations in Manipur, five individuals were arrested and a major arms and narcotics haul was recovered during coordinated security crackdowns across the state.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Manipur Police and security forces launched intensified operations targeting insurgent groups, drug traffickers, and illegal arms holders operating in both hill and valley regions.

In the valley, two individuals—Kharibam Nimai Singh (45) and Thingnam Sangeeta Devi (42)—were apprehended for their alleged involvement in extortion activities targeting civilians, private educational institutions, and a stone crusher plant.

In a separate high-profile bust, a Mahindra Thar was intercepted near the Imphal Telegraph Office in Imphal West District. Upon inspection, authorities recovered 100 soap cases containing approximately 1.16 kg of suspected heroin powder concealed in the vehicle’s rooftop. Three individuals—Wangpem Lamkang (20), Jacop Shangkhil (18), and Wanghon Khular (18)—all residents of Chandel District, were arrested on the spot.

Meanwhile, extensive area domination and search operations continued across vulnerable zones. In Thanlon village, Pherzawl District, security forces recovered two SBML guns with no serial numbers. Another major operation in Wabagai Thingel Leikai, under Hiyanglam Police Station in Kakching District, led to the seizure of a significant cache of weapons and three vehicle tyre rubber tubes, suspected to be used for transportation of arms or contraband.

Authorities confirmed that operations would continue in the coming days to neutralise insurgent threats and dismantle illegal arms and narcotics networks.
