Shillong, Oct 26: The Meghalaya Tourism Department has reiterated that the proposed Shillong Peak Ropeway Project has obtained all required statutory clearances, while maintaining that the project will not affect any water source and is expected to reduce vehicular congestion and emissions.

The department said the ropeway project is located 3.15 km from Lum Shyllong and that the ropeway cables and cabins would operate above the tree canopy.

The clarification comes amid concerns raised by local stakeholders over the project. The department thanked members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and other stakeholders for attending a briefing on the project on October 22, where officials made a detailed presentation.

The department said multiple consultations and public meetings had been held with local communities and other stakeholders. According to the press note, concerns raised during these consultations were considered and addressed through the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP).

The ESMP was reviewed by independent experts and approved by the New Development Bank, the department stated.

Highlighting the project’s expected benefits, the department said the ropeway could reduce the number of vehicles travelling to Shillong Peak, helping ease traffic congestion and lower vehicular emissions. It is also expected to create local employment opportunities and promote tourism in Meghalaya.

The department said it remained open to providing further clarifications and additional information sought by stakeholders. It also appealed for their support and cooperation in the successful implementation of the project.
