Nongpoh, May 28: An 8-year-old child narrowly escaped an alleged kidnapping and trafficking attempt in a village under Ri Bhoi district on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, the incident took place around 7:30 PM on May 27 when the child was walking alone along a village road. A man, reportedly related to the child and identified as the child’s uncle (pasan), allegedly approached and offered to take the child shopping. When the child refused, the accused allegedly forced the child onto a motorcycle and took the child to another village.

Family members lodged an FIR on Thursday, prompting police to launch an investigation and initiate efforts to apprehend the suspect involved in the alleged abduction.
As per the FIR, after reaching another location, the accused allegedly met three unidentified persons waiting with two motorcycles. The group was allegedly discussing plans to place the child inside a sack and sell the child.
After overhearing the conversation, the child resisted and managed to flee from the spot while crying for help. Fortunately, two men working nearby on water pipeline installations heard the cries and rushed to rescue the child.
The rescuers later handed the child over to the headman of a nearby village, who subsequently informed the family members about the incident.

Police have launched an investigation into the case and are searching for the other persons allegedly involved in the attempted abduction and trafficking.
