Guwahati, Sept 2: In a major crackdown against jihadi activities, Golakganj police have arrested another teacher for his alleged links with the Bangladeshi outfit Jamaat-e-Islami.
The arrested teacher has been identified as Hazrat Ali, also known as Hazrat Master.
According to police, Ali was apprehended from the Kazigaon area in Kokrajhar district late Saturday. A teacher by profession, he had reportedly been under surveillance for some time due to his suspicious movements and possible connections to extremist networks.
“We received credible information about Hazrat Ali’s involvement with jihadi elements, specifically the Jamaat-e-Islami of Bangladesh. Acting on the inputs, our team arrested him from his hideout in Kazigaon,” said a police official.
The Jamaat-e-Islami, a hardline Islamist party in Bangladesh, has long been accused of promoting radical ideologies and maintaining links with extremist groups. Investigators are now probing the extent of Ali’s connections and his possible role in facilitating regional activities.
Ali is currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation. Meanwhile, Assam police have intensified their statewide crackdown on jihadi elements believed to be taking shelter in different parts of the state.
