Imphal, April 6: Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Manipur on Sunday, rallying against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. More than 5,000 people participated in a demonstration along National Highway 102 in Lilong, Thoubal district—home to the state’s largest Muslim population.

President Droupadi Murmu granted assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 5, officially enacting them into law. The move followed intense debate in Parliament, where both bills were passed despite strong opposition.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was cleared in the Rajya Sabha after a 13-hour discussion, securing 128 votes in favor and 95 against. Earlier, the Lok Sabha had passed it with 288 votes supporting and 232 opposing. Critics, including opposition leaders, have labeled the legislation “anti-Muslim” and “unconstitutional,” arguing that it undermines the religious autonomy of the Muslim community. The government, however, insists that the amendments introduce “historic reforms” aimed at benefiting minorities.

Security was heightened across protest sites, with additional CRPF personnel deployed to maintain order. While minor scuffles occurred, no major incidents were reported as the rally proceeded under tight security from Aliya Madrasah to Lilong Haoreibi.

Symbolic protests were also staged in various localities after noon prayers, with demonstrators chanting slogans and carrying banners. Community members criticized the heavy security presence, alleging it was an attempt to suppress peaceful democratic protests.

Tensions briefly escalated in Irong Chesaba, Thoubal district, when security forces attempted to halt a rally, leading to minor clashes. However, no serious disturbances were reported.

Social worker and community leader Sakir Ahmed, who participated in the protests, condemned the bill, calling it a violation of constitutional principles and vowing to continue the demonstrations. Protests were also reported from Kshatri Awang Leikai, Kairang Muslim, Kiyamgei Muslim (Imphal East), and Sora (Bishnupur district), among other locations.
