Rabies outbreak in Manipur’s Churachandpur, 3 dead

Churachandpur, April 6: New Zoveng village in Churachandpur district in Manipur has been declared as a containment zone following death of three people due to rabies with the infection cases rising. So far, and over 700 individuals have reportedly been affected by dog bites since January 2025, sparking a public health alert in the area.

District Magistrate Dharun Kumar has issued an official order restricting the movement of pet dogs in and out of the containment zone. The order also bans the sale and transport of domestic dogs during this period. “Any person found violating the order will face penal action,” the notice stated.

In response to the outbreak, the Veterinary Department has formed Quick Response Teams (QRTs) to manage the crisis. These teams have begun door-to-door surveillance, health check-ups, and vaccination drives targeting both pet and stray dogs in the affected area.

As part of the emergency measures, around 30 households in New Zoveng have already been surveyed. Dogs owned by these families were vaccinated and given official certificates, while previously vaccinated dogs had their records verified.
