SHILLONG, MAY 21: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Thursday expressed grave concern over the ongoing conflict between the Kukis and Nagas in Manipur, condemning attacks on civilians and questioning what it called the Centre’s “inaction and alleged inflammatory role” in the prolonged crisis.

The resolutions were adopted at a meeting convened in Guwahati and hosted by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).

NESO said repeated incidents of ambushes, killings, abductions, and intimidation of innocent civilians had created an atmosphere of fear, insecurity, and instability across the region.

In its statement, chairman of NESO Samuel B Jyrwa unequivocally condemns the repeated killings and attacks on innocent civilians, including church leaders adding that “violence against unarmed and innocent civilians who were on a peace mission can never be justified.”

NESO also made a strong appeal for the “unconditional release of all hostages reportedly being held,” urging that “no harm be inflicted upon them.”

Turning to the Centre’s role, Jyrwa said the NESO “expresses strong condemnation and questions the role of the Government of India for its inaction and alleged inflammatory role in this prolonged conflict, which continues to claim innocent lives and destabilize the region.”

The statement noted that several people have been reported missing and remain untraceable since the violence began, and demanded that the government “employ all effective measures to ascertain their whereabouts.”

The meeting concluded with an appeal to all communities and stakeholders to reject violence and retaliation, and instead work collectively towards peace, justice, and the restoration of normalcy in Manipur.

NESO affirmed it would “continue standing for peace, the restoration of normalcy, and the dignity of all innocent civilians affected by the conflict.”

The deliberations were attended by representatives of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), AASU, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), and the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).
