Shillong, May 31: Jinysha D. Maiong, Member of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), has called for collective action to ensure the safety of children across the state amid concerns over rising crimes against women and children.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Maiong urged all sections of society to work together to create a safe environment for children and safeguard their rights and well-being.
“Meghalaya is the land of peace, and of respect and dignity. All communities across the state have lived here in harmony for many years without discrimination among citizens. But today we are very sad to know that we are seeing a daily rise in crimes, especially against infants, children and women,” she said.
Calling for immediate action, Maiong appealed to village authorities, civil society organisations, women’s groups, youth organisations, Village Defence Parties, police and district administrations to take responsibility in addressing the issue.
She stressed the need to strengthen Village-Level Child Protection Committees (VCPCs) under local dorbars to monitor child safety, identify school dropouts and report cases of abuse or trafficking.
Maiong also called for greater awareness on child protection laws, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Child Helpline 1098, through programmes involving schools, parents and non-governmental organisations.
She further emphasised the importance of promptly reporting crimes against children to the police and relevant authorities, stating that delays or silence could place children at greater risk.
Among other measures, she urged communities and educational institutions to promote values of respect and dignity so that children can grow up in a safe and supportive environment.
Maiong also appealed to the public to immediately report any law-and-order concerns to the authorities to prevent situations from escalating.
Reiterating the need for cooperation between citizens, government agencies and law enforcement authorities, she said collective efforts were essential to ensure safety, dignity and justice for every child in Meghalaya.
“Let us pledge to restore Meghalaya as the land of peace, safe for our children,” she said.
