Shillong, May 14: Meghalaya Police seized 30,000 explosive detonators and arrested two persons during a late-night naka checking operation in East Jaintia Hills district, officials said on Thursday.
According to a press release issued by East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Raksania, the interception took place at around 2:30 am on May 13 at 2 Kilo in Umkiang village under the Umkiang PPP naka point.
Police stopped a suspicious white Hyundai Eon bearing registration number AS-10-A-5916 that was heading towards Silchar from Meghalaya. During a thorough search of the vehicle, police recovered 30,000 explosive detonators concealed inside two carton boxes and a gunny bag.
The explosives were allegedly being transported illegally, and both occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.
The arrested persons were identified as Kamrul Ali Laskar of Jamalpur in Assam’s Cachar district and Ibrahim Uddin Laskar of Loknathpur in Cachar district.
A criminal case has been registered at Lumshnong Police Station under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita read with Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
Police said an investigation has been launched to trace the forward and backward linkages of the seized explosives and ascertain their intended destination and source.
