Shillong, July 19: The Meghalaya government has declared Monday a holiday for all schools and colleges across the state to allow students to stay up late and watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the decision in a video message posted on social media on Sunday, citing the state’s deep passion for football.
“Government has decided to declare a holiday for all educational institutions in Meghalaya, including schools and colleges. Enjoy the finals… Who are you supporting?” Sangma said.
The move means students will not have to attend classes the morning after the World Cup title clash, enabling football fans across the state to watch the late-night final without worrying about school or college the next day.
Football enjoys a near-religious following in Meghalaya, and the government’s decision is expected to be welcomed by thousands of students eager to watch the biggest match of the tournament.
