Shillong, Aug 4: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) – Kupli Area Circle on Monday conducted a surprise vehicle checking at Saphai village in West Jaintia Hills to prevent the illegal entry of migrants allegedly evicted by the Assam government for encroachment.

The checking was conducted in the presence of police personnel from the Saphai Police Outpost.

According to the KSU, several migrants who are being displaced by the Assam government due to alleged illegal settlement are now turning to Meghalaya in search of refuge, taking advantage of the state’s perceived leniency and absence of strict entry regulations. The union expressed concern that such conditions are encouraging migrants to cross into Meghalaya unlawfully.

The KSU further claimed that Saphai village is one of the main routes frequently used by migrants to enter the state without valid documentation.

Urging local authorities and village leaders to remain vigilant, the union appealed to residents to protect their land and ensure it is not overrun by outsiders.

The KSU also warned that it will continue such checks regularly and cautioned the government not to take the issue lightly. It stated that if authorities fail to act, the KSU will take matters into its own hands, even if it means being accused of violating the law in the interest of public safety.
