Imphal, Sept 27: The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) women’s wing staged a massive protest in Manipur’s Churachandpur town on Wednesday against the CBI inquiry initiated by the government.
The central government initiated the CBI inquiry against the alleged murder of a lover who eloped and was apparently killed, the video of which went viral yesterday, prompting massive protests in the state capital.
The deaths led to fresh protests by the people in the valley areas of strife-torn Manipur on Tuesday, and mobile internet services, which had been restored just days ago after nearly five months, were snapped once again in the evening.
A Home Department order said the mobile internet services would remain shut for the next five days.
Over 2000 womenfolk participated in the protest rally at Lamka public ground against the biassed attitude of the central government towards tribal people.
Marry Jone, convenor of the ITLF women’s wing, said, “We have organised the protest rally against the CBI inquiry. An inquiry has been initiated into the killing of two youths. The Home Ministry has taken prompt action by initiating a CBI inquiry but has not taken any action against other such cases. We can see so many instances in our tribal community where many women were raped and paraded naked. Even our men were brutally killed and their heads chopped off. But no CBI inquiry has been done till now. So why is the judiciary so biassed among the people? Are we not human? Are we not citizens of India?”.
“So we want a quick question from the Home Ministry. Why is there a community? attitude towards the communities? situation, there must be a solution, and we don’t want this. We don’t want a CBI inquiry because these two teenagers were loved and eloped. But no inquiry has been initiated till now towards the tribal people. So, the Indian government must see the situation, or else we are not going to keep quiet, and especially the ITLF quiet, wing will fight till the end,” said Marry Jone.
On Wednesday, a CBI team led by its director reached Manipur on a special flight to investigate the murder of two young students.
The Manipur government earlier said that the murder case of two young students had been handed over to the CBI, while the security forces have also initiated a search operation to nab the perpetrators.
