Shillong, Nov 27: Comingone Ymbon, Minister in charge of Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, met Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, in New Delhi to discuss key initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and improving service delivery in Meghalaya.
During the meeting, Ymbon emphasised the State Government’s commitment to the effective implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA). He highlighted efforts to ensure equitable distribution of foodgrains to beneficiaries across the state, despite Meghalaya’s challenging topography and dispersed population. The Minister elaborated on how the state is addressing gaps in coverage, strengthening grievance redressal mechanisms, and ensuring that the benefits of the NFSA reach the most vulnerable households.
Ymbon also outlined the State’s adoption of technology-driven solutions to improve the efficiency of the Public Distribution System (PDS). He presented the introduction of route optimisation techniques to streamline the transportation of foodgrains, reduce logistical costs, and ensure timely delivery to all corners of the state. These initiatives aim to overcome the significant geographical challenges posed by Meghalaya’s rugged terrain, while also minimising foodgrain losses during transit.
The Minister further discussed Meghalaya’s ongoing partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP). This collaboration focuses on modernising the PDS, reducing food wastage, and enhancing the nutritional outcomes for the state’s most vulnerable populations. Shri Ymbon highlighted the impact of these joint efforts, which have improved food supply chain management and promoted sustainability in food distribution systems.
Ymbon also took the opportunity to discuss various initiatives being undertaken by the State Government to improve transparency and accountability in food distribution. He highlighted the use of digital tools, such as Aadhaar-enabled services, e-POS devices, and real-time monitoring systems, which ensure that resources are utilised efficiently and benefits reach the intended recipients.
Pralhad Joshi lauded Meghalaya’s proactive approach to addressing its unique challenges and commended the State Government for embracing innovative and technology-based solutions. He assured Meghalaya of the Centre’s continued support in improving food security and enhancing the welfare of its citizens.
The meeting also explored opportunities for greater collaboration between the Centre and the State in advancing the goals of the NFSA, with a focus on strengthening the delivery of essential commodities and achieving the broader objectives of sustainable development.
This interaction marks a significant step in Meghalaya’s efforts to bolster food security and ensure that every citizen has access to nutritious foodgrains. Apart from the Hon’ble Minister, the meeting delegation was also accompanied by Shri Pravin Bakshi, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, and officials from the United Nations World Food Programme.
