Dibrugarh, June 4: Assam’s expanding anti-drug campaign took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when Tinsukia Police raided a psychiatrist’s clinic in Digboi, seizing a large quantity of suspected habit-forming medicines and detaining the doctor running the facility as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged illegal sale of controlled drugs.
The raid was carried out at the clinic of psychiatrist Dr. Sandeep Das, where police recovered a substantial stock of medicines believed to fall under regulated or potentially addictive categories. Officials also seized Rs 1.03 lakh in cash from the premises.
Police detained Dr. Das along with another individual who was allegedly found purchasing medicines without the documentation required under law.
Investigators identified the individual as Suman Gogoi, a resident of Dirak. According to police, he had allegedly procured medicines worth around Rs 53,000 without adhering to mandatory legal procedures governing the sale and purchase of controlled pharmaceutical products.
Sources said the operation forms part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies to tighten surveillance on the diversion and misuse of prescription drugs, an issue that has increasingly come under scrutiny amid Assam’s wider crackdown on narcotics and substance abuse.

Officials are now examining documents, prescriptions, stock registers and purchase records recovered during the search to determine whether any violations of drug control regulations or other legal provisions took place.
“Investigation is underway and all documents are being examined. Action will be taken as per law,” a police official said.
The incident has drawn attention to a growing concern among enforcement agencies regarding the misuse of prescription medicines and pharmaceutical drugs, which experts say can sometimes serve as an alternative pathway for substance dependency and illegal drug distribution networks.
Police said further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
