Guwahati, May 29: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday held talks in Guwahati on the recent tensions in the Lapangap border area and agreed to work jointly towards de-escalating the situation and expediting the long-pending boundary demarcation process.

Following the meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Sangma said the two leaders discussed concerns faced by residents of Lapangap and neighbouring villages amid the recent tensions along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

“We had a constructive discussion on measures to ease tensions and maintain peace and law and order,” Sangma said, while urging residents on both sides of the border to maintain peace as both governments work towards a permanent solution.

The Meghalaya chief minister also thanked Sarma for assuring cooperation in addressing the concerns of border residents and preventing future flare-ups.

“We had an excellent discussion and have made some good progress on long-standing legacy issues. On the boundary demarcation process, we agreed to expedite the ongoing process and bring a lasting solution to this matter,” Sangma said.

Sarma described it as an honour to host Sangma, whom he referred to as his “dear brother,” and highlighted the spirit of cooperation between the two neighbouring states.

The two chief ministers also discussed wider collaboration between Assam and Meghalaya in areas aimed at boosting the development of the Northeast, with Sangma noting that both states were exploring synergies under the “Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat” vision to strengthen the growth trajectory of the Ashtalakshmi region.
