Attempt to murder case filed

SHILLONG, SEPT 18: Additional Superintendent of Police in-charge Traffic Lovish Garg was seriously injured after a scooty with two riders allegedly tried to flee naka checking and rammed into him at Urkaliar in the early hours of Friday.

The checking was underway near Samkhamti Petrol Pump around 1:30 am when the duo on the scooty ignored police signals and sped ahead.

SP (City) Dangsan Khyriem said, “One scooty with two males attempted to evade the police checking and proceeded aggressively without stopping, despite directing them to stop.”

He said Garg stepped in to prevent their escape but was hit.

“To prevent their escape, Lovish Garg, IPS, Additional Superintendent of Police, Traffic, East Khasi Hills, intervened and signalled the rider to stop. However, instead of stopping, the scooty accelerated and hit the Additional Superintendent of Police, causing him serious injuries.”

Terming the act deliberate, Khyriem said, “The circumstances indicate that the act was deliberate and appears to have been intended to cause grievous injury to the officer and escape from being checked.”

“The motive for their movement at that hour of the night and attempting to escape the naka is being ascertained through a thorough investigation,” Khyriem said.

He added, “Strict naka/checking operations will continue in the interest of public safety and maintenance of law and order. All persons are expected to comply with lawful directions issued by police during such operations. Any attempt to evade police checking or act in contravention against police on duty will be dealt with firmly in accordance with law.”
