Shillong, August 18: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and the state’s preparedness for Jal Jeevan 2.0 (Phase II), with an assessment finding that 322 villages require focused attention to improve household water supply.

Sangma held the review meeting with the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department and the JJM Meghalaya team, focusing on the actual functionality of household tap connections rather than merely the reported coverage.

According to the assessment, 87.32% of villages receive regular water supply, while 79.23% receive water daily. Only 71.74% meet adequacy requirements, indicating gaps in the reliability and quantity of water reaching households.

“We have identified 322 villages requiring focused attention,” Sangma said in a post on X following the meeting.

The review also examined the reasons behind non-functional tap connections and discussed a State Improvement Plancovering repairs, retrofitting, operation and maintenance (O&M) costs and the long-term sustainability of water supply schemes.

The exercise was taken up as a follow-up to an earlier review meeting and involved assessing household tap connections across blocks and districts to determine actual water availability and identify gaps in coverage and functionality.

Sangma said the government’s focus was to ensure that every tap connection provides reliable, adequate and regular water to every household in Meghalaya.
