Shillong, July 6: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Project Director of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Shillong, along with two private persons in connection with an alleged ₹12-lakh bribery case linked to the clearance of a contractor’s pending bill worth ₹13.38 crore.

According to the CBI, the case was registered on July 1 following a complaint alleging that the NHAI official demanded a ₹12-lakh bribe to process the outstanding payment.

The agency said the complainant was initially asked to pay ₹4 lakh in advance through intermediaries in Guwahati.

The CBI laid a trap and caught one of the accused private persons allegedly accepting the ₹4 lakh bribe. Following the operation, the Project Director and the two intermediaries were arrested, and searches were carried out at their premises.

The investigation is on.
