DIBRUGARH, June 15: Dibrugarh Police have arrested six leaders and members of various organisations in connection with an alleged kidnapping, assault, and extortion case, with investigators indicating that more arrests could follow.

The arrests were made in connection with Duliajan Police Station Case No. 75/2026, registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to kidnapping, assault, and extortion.

Those arrested include Rintu Dutta, president of Bir Lachit Sena’s Dibrugarh district unit; Konkon Rajkonwar, president of the Duliajan Anchalik Committee of the Basanta-panthi faction of the Tai Ahom Students’ Union; Manash Pratim Gohain of Indrapuri, Duliajan; and Binod Sonowal of New Colony, Duliajan. Two others had been arrested earlier in related cases.

According to police, the case originated from a complaint filed by Uttam Jyoti Bora, an official of Udipta Energy and Equipment Private Limited, a contractor engaged by OIL. Bora alleged that on the night of May 10, a group of individuals entered the company’s office, created a hostile situation, forcibly abducted him in a vehicle, physically assaulted him, and demanded money.

Following the complaint, Duliajan Police registered an FIR and launched an investigation that led to a series of arrests. Earlier, police had apprehended Ranjit Bora and Prahlad Gogoi in a related case registered as Duliajan Police Station Case No. 73/2026. Both have since been remanded to judicial custody.

Police also carried out a raid at an OIL residential quarter in Duliajan to arrest another accused linked to the case. However, the suspect allegedly escaped after learning of the police operation.

“We have so far arrested six persons in connection with two FIRs registered at Duliajan Police Station. The investigation is continuing, and more arrests are likely,” said Atul Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Dibrugarh.

The case has drawn attention because of the involvement of office-bearers of prominent local organisations and the alleged targeting of an official associated with an OIL contractor. Police said efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining accused and uncover the full extent of the alleged extortion network.
