Lalduhoma Appeals for Assistance and Prayers

Aizawl, May 31: Mizoram has emerged as one of the worst-affected states of the Northeast in the wake of cyclone Remal, as more than 27 people have lost their lives, and many others are still missing. Remal has wreaked havoc in the Aizawl, Lunglei and Mamit districts and devastated more than 157 villages across the state. Severe landslides have been triggered by incessant rains induced by cyclone Remal across the state.

Reacting to the fury of nature, Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed his condolences to those who lost their precious lives and to those who have been displaced in flooding and landslides in the aftermath of the cyclone, stating, “I convey my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones and to those who have been displaced both in Mizoram and in our neighbouring sister States.”

He also lauded the efforts of NGOs, Volunteer groups, Disaster Response teams of the state and Central governments, Assam rifles, PWD, Power and Electricity, Public Health Engineering, Mizoram Police, and the medical fraternity in disaster management and Rehabilitation work.

He added that the situation is actively monitored by himself, the home minister, the chief secretary, district administrations, and all MLAs of the respective constituencies.

Talking about the evacuation of stranded families in far-flung areas of Mamit district, CM informed that the evacuation operations are underway, adding that the rescue operations are affected by the landslides and flooding, which has resulted in damaging road communications.

He said, “Electricity supply has also been disrupted due to power lines being damaged by fallen trees and landslide debris, and in some locations, poles themselves are being washed away in landslides. Consequently, mobile and Wi-Fi connections have been severely disrupted, and communication with district administrations and villages is extremely difficult.”

Earlier, CM Lalduhoma announced Rs. 15 cr assistance for the victims of cyclone Remal with Rs. 4 lakh as ex-gratia to the relatives of those who lost their lives in the natural calamity.
