Guwahati, Mar 14: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that the state has been planning to boost the solar power plants throughout the state.

The state government is trying to make Assam a green energy hub. Assam currently requires 2,200 MW of power to provide electricity to all households across the state.

A solar policy was formulated in Assam in 2017 with a target of generating 1,000 MW of electricity within the next three years. The government is set to introduce floating solar power plants across multiple wetlands in the state, aiming to enhance electricity generation capacity.

Speaking to reporters, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed on solar power and wants India to become a solar power. Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojna the Central government will provide subsidies to those who apply for the Solar panel,”.

Assam CM further added that, “if anyone applies for 1 KW of solar panel it will cost Rs 50,000. The Central government will give Rs 30,000 subsidy and the Assam government has decided to give a subsidy of Rs 15,000 and the person should give Rs 5000. For 2 KW, the government subsidy will be Rs 60,0000 and for 3 KW the subsidy will be Rs 78,000. The state government has decided to give subsidies on the scheme.

The first floating solar power plant of 10.50 JW capacity in Northeast India was successfully installed in Thanagarh village in Assam’s Morigaon district.

Another significant milestone includes the establishment of the region’s largest solar power plant in Amguri town, Sivsagar district, capable of generating a minimum of 70 MW of electricity.
