Shillong, Jan 29: President of the North Eastern Hill University Teachers Association (NEHUTA) Prof. Lakhon Kma announced his decision to contest from the Shillong parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, on Monday.

However, Kma is yet to disclose if he would be contesting as an independent candidate or seek a party ticket.

He expressed that his primary goal is to drive the development and self-sufficiency of Meghalaya, particularly targeting specific districts like East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi district.

Kma outlined key priorities, including addressing basic needs such as schools, roads, electricity, potable water, healthcare, and sanitation. He highlighted the importance of support and cooperation from the entire population, especially those in Khasi, Jaintia, and Ri-Bhoi districts.

Focusing on the youth population, Kma stressed the urgency of creating job opportunities through government services or entrepreneurship, requiring financial and infrastructural support.

“Conflicts arise when there is a serious dearth of employment opportunities. Peace comes when everyone is gainfully employed and has a decent standard of life and this is true across the globe. In this journey that I am embarking, there will be difficulties and shortcomings but I believe that if we unite together and work for a new Meghalaya, with each other’s cooperation, we can reach greater heights,”he said.

Additionally, Kma discussed issues like railways, Inner Line Permit, State Reservation Policy, and interstate disputes with Assam. He emphasised the need for careful handling, considering everyone’s interests to balance preserving identities and fostering economic progress for all.
