TURA, Oct 10: A sitting MDC of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council representing Zikzak has been accused by a social group called Civil Society A’chik Welfare Organization (CSAWO) of abandoning a road project funded by the centre leaving villagers in peril in the region of South West Garo Hills.

The MDC Akthar Ali of Zikzak (Independent) had been allotted the PMGSY road project from Hulukona to Gopinathkilla, a distance of 4 kms, almost four years ago.

While the PMGSY steel banner proudly displays the project with its details and name of the contractor, yet, on the ground there is nothing much to see but a totally damaged road filled with potholes and rain water and little or no pitch or tarmac.

The CSAWO headquartered in Ampati has blamed the MDC of abandoning the road project which was meant to connect multiple villages in the area that are close to the international border with Bangladesh.

The group has decided to move for an RTI to find out as to what extend was the project taken up and how much of the allocated funds were withdrawn by the contractor turned politician.

“Children going to schools from the villages along this road depend on it for transportation. So also do the villagers to head to markets and towns. It is difficult to travel on this totally damaged road,” said Tryans Ch Marak, president of the CSAWO.

He added that filing of RTIs should be an eyeopener for departments to ensure projects are completed.
