Williamnagar Court convicts rapist to 7 years

Williamnagar, July 4: The district Sessions Court in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, has given a prison term of 7 years to a rapist who sexually assaulted a woman in 2017.

The sentencing was carried out on June 29th by District Session Judge M Skhemlon in court. The accused has also been directed to pay a sum of Rs 1500 and also an additional one more year of simple imprisonment with a further Rs 500 fine for other offences.

On 23rd February 2017 an FIR was received against one accused Md. Rafiqul Ali for sexually assaulting a woman on the 23rd of February 2017. The accused was arrested and forwarded to judicial custody while an investigation was carried out by woman police officer Nitu I Sangma, officer in charge of Williamnagar Women police station.

The investigation officer framed a watertight case against the accused and filed a chargesheet within three months.

On 29th of June, 2022, finding sufficient evidence against the accused, the District Session Judge M Skhemlon gave the conviction with a fine against the accused.
