West Khasi Hills’ POSCO Court sentences one to 25 years of imprisonment for sexually assaulting minor

Nongstoin, Nov 18: The Court of the Special Judge (POSCO), West Khasi Hills District, has convicted one person to 25 years of imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 50,000 for sexually assaulting a minor in 2014.

In its order passed on 15.11.2022, the POSCO court found one Kelding Thongni guilty of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl from Ummawri village in April and May, 2014 at Ummawri village itself in West Khasi Hills.

The matter had been reported to Nongstoin Police Station where a case was registered vide Nongstoin PS C/No. 67(06)2014 U/S 376 (2) (1) IPC R/W Section 3(a)/4 POCSO Act. On enquiry and due to the immense efforts by the police officials, Thongni was arrested.

In a press statement, Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills, said “…after a thorough investigation on the case, a favourable judgement had been given by the Court.”

The statement further informed that Thongni has been handed the sentence for the Offence punishable under Section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012. The convicted has been sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 50,000 and in default of payment of fine, the convict is to further undergo 6 months of simple imprisonment.
