SHILLONG, Nov 25: In a big catch, the custom sleuths have seized heroin worth over Rs 2.59 crore and arrested two persons in Shillong.
Acting on specific information that a consignment of drugs would be carried in a car coming from Silchar, officers of CCP Shillong intercepted a Tata Punch car in the evening of November 22, at Nongmynsong, Shillong.
On interrogation of the occupants, it was denied that any such contraband was being carried by them. However, on thorough rummaging of the vehicle, 30 soap cases of similar size were recovered from the interior part of the vehicle dashboard. On being tested with the field test kit, the product tested positive for heroin.
“A total of 370 gms of pinkish powdery substance tested to be Heroin was recovered and seized with a seizure value of approx. Rs 2.59 Crore. Two persons have been arrested and further investigation is in progress,” a statement issued by the Commissioner of Custom Preventive (CCP) said on Saturday.
It said that customs remains committed to combating all types of cross border crime involving smuggling of Gold, Cigarettes, drugs and narcotics, wildlife articles, Fake Indian Currency Notes, import-export frauds and trade based money laundering.
“Customs works in close partnership with various other law enforcement agencies. Anybody can support the fight against Cross Border crime, Smuggling and Trade Based Money laundering by giving information to Customs. The names of informers are not only kept confidential, but there is an excellent reward scheme also, which is Income Tax free,” it said.
