Agartala, May 19: A couple serving in Tripura’s security forces has been arrested after a viral video allegedly showed huge bundles of cash inside the residence of a police constable.

The incident has triggered widespread public concern and prompted an official investigation.

The accused have been identified as Menka Debbarma, a woman constable attached to Agartala East Police Station, and Ajit Debbarma, a jawan of the 14th Battalion of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR).

The viral video allegedly showed bundles of currency notes scattered across the floor, while a tribal woman was seen sitting beside the cash. The footage quickly spread across multiple social media platforms, raising serious questions over the source of the money and possible links to illegal activities.

Acting swiftly, Tripura Police launched an inquiry and detained 15 individuals in connection with the case. According to police, those detained are being interrogated to ascertain the authenticity of the video, the ownership of the cash, and whether any criminal network or unlawful financial transactions are involved.

Police said the couple was arrested in connection with an alleged financial scam registered under Salema Police Station in Dhalai district.

Speaking to reporters, Tripura Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper said, “We have registered a case and started an investigation. So far, we have not recovered any cash. We have seen the cash in the viral video, but no money has been seized yet. The investigation is ongoing.”
