SHILLONG, MAY 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said discussions with Assam on the second phase of border talks to resolve the remaining six areas of difference will be taken up shortly, once the new government in Assam is sworn in.

Responding to queries on the status of the inter-state border negotiations, Sangma said the process would resume after a brief pause.

“The new government is being sworn in Assam. Therefore, let a few days pass. I will communicate with the Assam Chief Minister and we will definitely take the discussion forward very soon,” Sangma told reporters.

The second phase of talks covers six remaining areas of difference between the two states — Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah, Block I & Block II, and Psiar-Khanduli.

The first phase of the border settlement was concluded in March 2022, when both states signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to resolve six of the 12 disputed areas. The agreement covered Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillangkata, and Ratacherra.

Sangma indicated that his government remains committed to the process. “We will definitely take the discussion forward very soon,” he reiterated.
