Tura, June 29: Pressure groups in Tura, along with the Range Forest Officer of Tura and Purakhasia in West Garo Hills, intercepted a vehicle transporting illegal timber on Wednesday evening near the village of Baromile in the district.
The coordinated efforts of pressure groups, including GSU – CEC, Interim Body of FKJGP – Garo Hills Zone, GSMC, along with the Range Forest Officer of Tura and Purakhasia, led to the apprehension of the timber-laden vehicle.
The incident took place around 11 pm when the groups received information about the movement of a suspicious timber vehicle. Upon spotting the identified vehicle, they promptly intervened and conducted a thorough inspection, revealing a significant amount of freshly sawed logs.
The driver of the vehicle informed them that the vehicle was transporting the illegal timber from West Garo Hills to Assam. The registration number of the seized vehicle is ML09A 6226.
Following the interception, the confiscated timber and related materials were handed over to the Range Office in West Garo Hills, Tura, for further legal proceedings and appropriate action.
It is to be mentioned that local pressure groups and the Range Forest Officer are making collective efforts to combat illegal logging and preserve the region’s valuable forest resources.
