Polling official dies in road accident in Garo Hills

Tura, Feb 26: A young polling official who was heading with his team for elections in Garo Hills has been killed in a road accident near Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills on Saturday night.

30 year old Chesan Ch Marak of Chandmari Tura, who works as the Technical Assistant for MGNREGA at Gambegre Block had been deputed as second polling official for Jangrapara polling station in Tikrikilla.

He had left Tura with his 8 member polling team from Tura on Saturday as part of the first batch of personnel deployed for duty.

They were travelling in a Mahindra pick up when the driver, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle causing it to capsize. The accident took place at Potamati village.

The driver fled from the scene leaving the polling team with injuries, including Chesan who sustained head injuries.

Rescue teams comprising of locals and authorities managed to take the injured to the nearest hospital for medical treatment but the second polling official was found to be in critical condition.

He was taken to Guwahati for further medical treatment but passed away from his injuries early Sunday morning.

Two BSF personnel and one home guard personnel who were giving armed escort also sustained injuries.

The Zonal magistrate has since arrived on the scene and taken control of the EVM and VVPAT and proceeded to the Jangrapara polling station with a reserved team.
