Police Breakthrough: Four Suspects Apprehended in Connection with SWGH Rape Incident

Tura, April 24: The police have apprehended four individuals, two hailing from Assam and two from Meghalaya, in connection with the rape incident during the Chenga Benga Mela at Gandhipara village near Garobadha in South West Garo Hills.

One was arrested from a bus intercepted in Rajabala, while the remaining suspects were nabbed by Assam police near the border in Hatsingimari town.

According to reports, the authorities received intelligence regarding the suspects’ movements. Acting swiftly, a team intercepted a bus in Rajabala, where two assailants were attempting to flee. In a simultaneous operation, Assam police arrested two other suspects in Hatsingimari town, near the border. Despite attempts to evade capture, the individuals were successfully detained by the authorities.

All four arrested individuals are reported to be Bengali speakers, aged between 22 and 26 years old. While their exact involvement in the incident remains under investigation, authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for justice. It is believed that these arrests may shed light on the broader context of the incident, potentially leading to further breakthroughs in the case.

According to a Police source two individuals are in police custody and the other two will be produced in the court later in the evening today after some formalities . All four suspects have been transported to Ampati. As the investigation progresses, authorities remain vigilant.

It may be mentioned that two minor girls were assaulted and raped on April 17 evening during the ongoing festivities – Chenga Benga Mela. The victims, who were accompanied by male companions, were attacked by the miscreants, and one of the girls was brutally raped and assaulted.
