Shillong, Dec 14: There has been speculation in Meghalaya’s political circles about a possible major political move involving former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Dr. Mukul Sangma, with rumours suggesting that he may join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). However, a senior NPP source has dismissed these claims, confirming it as just ‘rumour’.
“There are no official talks. This is just a rumour,” the NPP source said.
The source said that neither the NPP has approached Dr. Sangma nor has Dr. Sangma contacted the party regarding any move.
While it is possible that Dr. Sangma may be in touch with leaders across parties at a personal level, the source made it clear that there are “no talks” about him joining the NPP.
When asked whether the NPP would welcome Dr. Sangma if he decided to join, the source said the party remains open. “Anyone is welcome to join the party. Our doors are open,” the source said.
The speculation comes at a time when political activity is picking up ahead of the GHADC elections. A news report surfaced on Saturday claiming that Dr. Mukul was joining the NPP. However, the report was based purely on speculation, as neither Dr. Mukul nor any NPP leader has confirmed the information.
But is it really possible?, a million dollar question.
Yes and NO.
Firstly, Yes. The TMC’s position in the state has weakened in recent months, with several leaders leaving the party. Recently, Dr. Sangma’s younger brother and former MLA Zenith Sangma joined the Indian National Congress.
Even though, Dr. Mukul Sangma has openly disagreed with his brother’s decision, saying Zenith may be wrong in thinking that his political goals would be achieved there. “He might feel his aspirations will be fulfilled if he shifts, but he may be wrong. I will prove it,” Dr. Sangma had said.
Maybe a No, why?
Dr. Mukul and the NPP Chief, Conrad K Sangma are two prominent figures of the Garo Hills. Two guns of the same caliber as in every election the two faces are seen as the man who will be the Chief Minister. Now the two force working together, may seems too good to be true but ‘anything or everything can happen in politics’
For now, the NPP has made it clear that reports of Dr. Mukul Sangma joining the party are only rumours. Whether any political shift will take place in the future remains uncertain and only time will tell.
