Agreement for first occupancy at Shillong Technology Park-II signed as industry leaders push for AI-ready skilling, startup growth, and stronger digital infrastructure in Meghalaya.
Shillong, May 14: Meghalaya intensified its push to emerge as a regional technology and innovation hub at the NASSCOM Industry Leaders’ Meet 2026, held here on Thursday.
The meet brought together top IT companies, policymakers, skilling institutions, and industry leaders to chart a roadmap for the State’s digital economy.
Organised by the Department of Information Technology & Communications, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the NASSCOM, the meeting focused on expanding IT-enabled services, strengthening startup ecosystems, and creating future-ready employment opportunities for youth.
A major highlight of the event was the signing of an agreement between StaffFlex Resolutions LLP and the Meghalaya Technology Parks Society for leasing space at Shillong Technology Park-II, making StaffFlex the first confirmed occupant of the facility. The agreement is being viewed as a significant milestone in operationalising Meghalaya’s expanding IT infrastructure and attracting investor confidence to the State’s growing technology ecosystem.
Addressing the gathering, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the State’s IT sector growth has been the result of a long and gradual effort spanning nearly two decades.
“I have been trying to build this momentum for many years. Things take time, but when I look back, it has now been 18 years since I first engaged with this sector as IT Minister in 2008,” he said.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that progress remained limited for several years before the government renewed focus on the sector after 2018.
“When I returned as Chief Minister in 2018, we began working again in a focused manner on building the IT sector and strengthening the ecosystem,” he stated.
Highlighting the State’s infrastructure expansion, Sangma said Shillong Technology Park-II is now ready, while another IT park is being developed in Tura. He stressed that building a successful technology sector requires a broader ecosystem approach rather than isolated infrastructure projects.
“You have to build an ecosystem for the industry to survive and thrive. That is what we are trying to do,” he said.
The Chief Minister also underscored the importance of collaboration between government, industry, academic institutions, and skilling partners in creating sustainable growth in the digital economy.
He asserted that the government was committed to meaningful implementation rather than symbolic agreements. “We are not interested in signing MOUs just for the sake of optics or photo opportunities where nothing materialises afterwards,” he remarked.
The programme also featured a high-level roundtable discussion chaired by the Chief Minister with representatives from leading IT and BPM firms, who proposed measures to strengthen Meghalaya’s startup ecosystem, innovation infrastructure, and ease of doing business.
Industry participants suggested establishing a signature innovation hub, creating a startup task force, and accelerating policy implementation through structured roadmaps and best-practice frameworks drawn from successful startup ecosystems across the country.
A major area of focus during the discussions was future-ready skilling, with industry leaders warning that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and automation are transforming traditional BPM and IT services roles.
Participants recommended integrating emerging skills such as cognitive AI systems, prompt engineering, cybersecurity awareness, digital fundamentals, and compliance training into academic curricula to better prepare youth for evolving job markets.
The meeting also discussed regulatory reforms, including faster approvals, stronger single-window systems, and predictable compliance frameworks to improve the ease of doing business for technology firms establishing operations in Meghalaya.
Sangma reiterated the State Government’s commitment to strengthening digital governance and citizen-centric services while positioning Shillong as a regional hub for IT services, innovation, and AI-led governance solutions.
The roundtable was attended by senior representatives from major companies including Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Infosys BPM, Concentrix, TaskUs, and Alorica, along with senior leadership from NASSCOM.
The event also included an Industry, Academia & Skilling Session involving academic institutions, industry representatives, and the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society to discuss aligning training programmes with industry requirements and improving employability outcomes for local youth.
