Meghalaya pushes ₹1,928-crore redevelopment plan for Tura, reviews mega urban projects

Shillong, May 12: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday reviewed a massive ₹1,928-crore redevelopment plan for Tura town, with focus on accelerating key infrastructure, tourism, sports and urban renewal projects aimed at transforming the commercial hub of the Garo Hills.

The review meeting, held in the presence of Cabinet Ministers Timothy D. Shira and Sanbor Shullai, assessed the progress of ongoing projects and upcoming works that will be implemented in phases across the town.

Officials reviewed ongoing projects worth over ₹1,331 crore, including the ₹165-crore Tura Integrated Administrative Complex, which is expected to be completed in phases beginning September 2027.

Major sports infrastructure projects under implementation include the PA Sangma Sports Complex and its West Stand, the Pa Togan Sangma Track and Field Stadium, along with the Tura Technology Park.

The meeting also reviewed works related to the beautification of Tura Bazaar, construction of a Convention Centre, Pelga Tourist Circuits and Hospitality Complex, Working Women’s Hostel, heliport development, and the Tura Water Supply Scheme.

Officials informed that redevelopment work at the Polo Orchid Hotel is expected to begin shortly.

The government also reviewed projects worth ₹242.74 crore that are ready for tendering. These include the redevelopment of Najing Bazaar, a multi-level parking and cinema complex at SMELC, Tura City Park, an Active Ageing Centre, a Kids Zone at Araimile, and the proposed Tura Promenade.

Other planned projects include the Chief Minister’s Youth Center, renovation of the Circuit House, development of a commercial complex, installation of street lighting, and sports infrastructure at Kendriya Vidyalaya.

In addition, projects currently at the conceptual stage and estimated at around ₹155 crore include affordable housing, an archery complex, and additional commercial infrastructure.

During the meeting, Sangma stressed the importance of timely execution and called for stronger coordination among departments to ensure the projects are completed efficiently.
