Meghalaya police arrest 3 top KSU leaders over Shillong rally violence

SHILLONG, AUG 19: Meghalaya police on Wednesday night, arrested three top leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) including the president, vice president and general secretary in connection with the acts of vandalism during the bike rally in Shillong.

“Our president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben Najiar have been arrested and taken to the Sadar police station,” a KSU leader confirmed in their official media group.

Police sources informed that the KSU leaders have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including sections related to damage to public property, assault on civilians, violation of law and others.

This arrest came just a few hours after the leaders addressed the media to clarify on the incidents that occurred during the bike rally, which led to damage to 31 vehicles and injuries to several people who were assaulted.

KSU bike rally witnessed incidents of stone pelting at vehicles, vandalism of vehicles from outside the state, burning of a government vehicle and assault on pedestrians at various locations.

On their part, the KSU leaders expressed concern and regret over what happened during the rally and alleged that it was miscreants who carried out these acts with the intention to tarnish and sabotage the agitation and the demands of the Union.

Following the arrests, police also raided the KSU office in Jaiaw, during which tear gas was fired.
