Shillong, June 26: Meghalaya on Thursday observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a series of awareness programmes across schools, colleges and public spaces, reaffirming its commitment to building a drug-free society.
Observed under the theme ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan – Viksit Bharat Ki Pehchaan’, this year’s campaign focused on educating children and young people about the dangers of substance abuse while encouraging healthy choices and responsible decision-making.

As part of the statewide initiative, police stations and outposts across Ri-Bhoi district organised awareness programmes in educational institutions and community spaces, reaching hundreds of students, teachers and members of the public. Sessions were held at institutions including Mahatma Gandhi University, Kendriya Vidyalaya NEPA, Patharkmah Higher Secondary School, Mynken Christian Higher Secondary School and Sachit Christian Secondary School, among others.
Police officers interacted with students on the physical, psychological and social consequences of drug abuse, stressing the importance of early intervention and community participation in tackling the growing drug menace.

Adding a practical dimension to the campaign, the Meghalaya Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) organised a live demonstration by its K9 Unit, showcasing how specially trained sniffer dogs detect narcotic substances and assist law enforcement in anti-drug operations. K9 handlers also explained how the detection dogs are trained and deployed in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
The programme was attended by police officials, students, members of the public and invited guests, including faculty members from Gandhi Bunyadi Secondary School.
The observance concluded with participants taking a pledge to support the fight against drug abuse and work together towards creating a safer, healthier and drug-free Meghalaya.
