Shillong, June 27: The officer of the Fisheries department on Tuesday tested the imported fish brought from outside the states to access if there’s any high level of formalin in the fishes as traced earlier by food safety department.

This is done after the government banned imported fish for 15 days in the state. The test was done at Iewduh, samples were collected from the fish that was brought in by trucks from outside Meghalaya.

While speaking to mediapersons, the fish sellers mentioned the challenges they have been facing due to the delay of providing report on the fish brought in from outside if it has been contaminated or not. “Fish is a product that gets stale immediately if not sold quickly. We urge the government to provide the report of the samples immediately once the test are done so that the market is not affected,” urged one of the fish sellers.

The fish that were brought on Tuesday were like rohu and other types of fish species.

Earlier on Saturday, the state government lifted the ban on the sale of imported fresh fish with immediate effect.

In the notification issued by the Commissioner of Food Safety RM Kurbah on Saturday said, “It is for information of all concerned that the prohibition of the storage, distribution and sale of imported fresh fish or crustaceans brought from outside the state vide order dated June 8, is hereby lifted with effect from June 24.”

On June 9, the department of Food and Safety had issued a notification putting a ban on selling of imported fishes after a high level of formalin was detected.
