Shillong, Nov 8: The State government has decided to invite the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) for discussion on the proposed relocation of the Sweepers’ Colony from Them Iew Mawlong on November 16.
This was informed before the Meghalaya High Court during a hearing on the matter here on Wednesday.
In its order, the division bench comprising Justice W Diengdoh and Justice B Bhattacharjee said the AG has submitted that a proposal has come from the State Government to call upon the respondents (HPC) for a meeting so as to solve the dispute or any pending issues between the parties once and for all.
In this regard, the AG has also submitted that the proposed meeting is slated to be held either on 15 or 16 of November, 2023. However, it is also submitted that the respondents if not convenient to attend the said meeting on the said dates, may propose some other dates to allow the parties to meet and to amicably settle such issues.
The bench said that at this stage it would not proceed further but would allow the parties to meet as proposed.
“The outcome of the meeting is to be informed and placed before this Court in the form of a report. Accordingly, this matter is now listed to be heard in the first week of December 2023,” it added.
On September 29, the Meghalaya government had also informed the High Court that it had agreed to increase the individual plot sizes as requested by the residents of the Sweepers’ Colony.
It may be mentioned that the government in its blueprint has proposed to relocate the 342 families of Sweepers’ Colony to existing land of the Shillong Municipal Board.
