Guwahati, Dec 13: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced that the investigation into Congress leader and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife’s alleged links with Pakistan will be handed over to a central agency, citing the complexity and sensitivity of the case.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the scope of the probe goes beyond the capacity of the state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT).
“In a case where so much complexity is involved, it will not be possible for the Assam SIT alone to investigate and unearth all aspects. The matter will therefore be handed over to a central agency for further investigation,” he said.
The Chief Minister added that once the Zubeen Garg case moves into the regular trial stage, the state government will share certain documents related to the Gogoi matter.
“We will share key documents by the end of this month or early next month,” Sarma said.
Despite the proposed transfer of the probe, Sarma maintained that the findings of the SIT so far were sufficient to draw conclusions.
“Whatever the SIT has achieved in the Gaurav Gogoi case is enough to draw a conclusion against the accused,” he claimed.
The Assam government had earlier constituted an SIT to probe allegations made by Sarma against Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Colburn, regarding their alleged links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Reiterating the need for central agency involvement, Sarma said the case’s intricacies and national security implications necessitate a more comprehensive investigation, even as he asserted that the SIT’s findings already point to serious concerns.
