TURA, April 16: A flying squad team of the election department that was on duty in Tikrikilla to ensure election rules are in place was attacked by unidentified men on Monday night resulting in injuries to the flying squad magistrate.

It is the first case of violence during the election campaign period for the Tura Lok Sabha seat.

The team had been in the area to monitor a TMC election campaign of Zenith Sangma and the attack happened after the rally got over and people had already dispersed, sometime between 9:30 to 10 PM Monday night.

“The rally had concluded at Tikrikilla bazar without any problem and everyone had already dispersed but we remained in the area since it is our duty to check for any violations. That’s when around five men suddenly emerged from the darkness and attacked us,” said flying squad magistrate Adinson Ch Momin who was left bleeding from the face on account of the attack.

The men reportedly blurted out that they had been waiting to target them but did not cite any reason.

The three member flying squad team consisted of Momin, his camera man and a police constable.

In his report to police at Tikrikilla station, Adison Momin stated that the men were intoxicated and fled from the scene when the police constable on duty rushed to his aid.

“There was no group clash or anything and had nothing to do with the political parties,” stated Momin in his report.
