Shillong, July 30: Former Karnataka Minister Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar was sworn-in as the new Governor of Meghalaya on Tuesday at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Shillong.

The oath of office to the new Governor was administered by Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, S. Vaidyanathan.

The oath taking ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, cabinet ministers, and senior government officials.

Vijayashankar’s appointment comes as part of a recent gubernatorial reshuffle announced by President Droupadi Murmu on July 27, which saw new governors named for nine states and Union Territories across India.

He was elected as member of Karnataka Legislative assembly in 1994. In 1998, he was elected as Lok Sabha member from Mysore Lok Sabha constituency. He was re-elected to the Mysore Lok Sabha constituency in 2004.

Vijayashankar served as a cabinet minister in the government of Karnataka, holding the portfolios of the forest department and small scale industries. He unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Hassan constituency as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, running against former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda.

He was also a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from June 15, 2010, until the end of his tenure in January 2016.
