Shillong, June 21: Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on Thursday afternoon reportedly stormed and gheraoed the Umkiang Police Patrolling Post in East Jaintia Hills to forcefully release three of their summoned jawans.

The three were summoned after a local resident of Kuliang village in East Jaintia Hills (EJH) filed an FIR against them for allegedly assaulting her husband and molesting her daughter on Wednesday night.

Following the incident, the police summoned the BSF personnel to the Umkiang Police outpost.

However, according to eyewitness reports, 35-40 BSF personnel stormed the outpost, gheraoed it, and forcefully demanded the release of the three jawans.

The Umkiang police, being outnumbered, were forced to release all three jawans, added the eyewitness.

Interestingly, the Superintendent of Police (SP) East Jaintia Hills, Giri Prasad, denied that any gherao incident happened but informed that a case has been registered against the three jawans under sections 457/326/354/506/384/34 IPC R/W and Section 7/8 of the POCSO Act. He added that the police “will do the needful during the investigation and identify the perpetrators.”

It may be mentioned that one Martina Pohshna filed the FIR with the in-charge of the Umkiang police patrol post on Thursday, requesting the police to take action against all the BSF personnel involved in the incident.

In the FIR, she narrated that on Wednesday night, at around 11:30 PM, three people, who claimed to be BSF but were not wearing uniforms, forcefully entered her house in Kuliang village and started assaulting her husband, Shanroi Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi.

However, the BSF version of the incident claims that they were attacked by the locals of Kuliang. The BSF alleged that the villagers are providing safe passage to illegal Bangladeshi smugglers.

A video of the incident, in which the BSF jawans are seen wielding axes and lathis and threatening to attack the residents, has also gone viral.
