Assam police urges citizen to be careful while interacting with unknown WhatsApp numbers

Guwahati, July 13: The Assam police have requested the citizens to be careful while interacting with WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers.

“Beware Of WhatsApp Scams.
Citizens are requested to be extremely careful while interacting with WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers, using a picture of someone you know. It’s most likely to be a SCAM. Immediately report such messages and block the numbers,” Assam police tweeted.

Assam minister Bimal Borah on Monday filed an FIR after a fraudster asked money through a WhatsApp number from government officials in his name.

Bimal Borah has lodged a FIR with the Dispur police station in Guwahati.

Money was demanded from several government officials and businessmen through the fake account opened in Borah’s name, that also had Borah’s picture.

In another instance, unidentified fraudster, asking money from people by using Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metropolitan Pallav Gopal Jha’s photo.

Jha’s office filed the complaint at the Panbazar police station regarding a fraudster using multiple numbers and impersonating him to solicit “financial translation from different individuals”.

Meanwhile, ADC Kalpana Deka also complained of receiving several messages on WhatsApp from different numbers demanding money.
