Guwahati, Oct 19: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured strong security measures and developmental initiatives in the Tapat (also known as Lapangngap) border stretch of West Karbi Anglong, following a recent violent incident that claimed one life.

The incident happened when residents of Lapangap were allowed to collect paddy from their fields under police supervision. However, a group from the Karbi side arrived, leading to a fight that resulted in one fatality.

The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Orivel Timung, son of Sarpang Eh Timung from Tahpat village under the Karbi community. Few police personnel and villagers also sustained injuries during the incident.

The Chief Minister’s assurance came in response to a memorandum submitted by several Karbi student and youth organisations. The Chief Minister announced a series of measures aimed at restoring peace and ensuring welfare in the sensitive border region.

As part of his commitments, Sarma said a permanent battalion camp will be established at Tapat/Lapangngap to bolster security. The family of the deceased, Lt. Oriwel Timung, will receive an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh and a government job under the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

The Chief Minister also confirmed that border pillars will be reinstalled in accordance with the Government Notification of November 17, 1951, reaffirming that Block I and II in West Karbi Anglong fall under the jurisdiction of the KAAC and will remain so.

In addition to security measures, Sarma announced initiatives to enhance healthcare, education, and welfare infrastructure in the border areas. He also assured that he would personally visit Tapat/Lapangngap in November to review the situation on the ground.

Describing the meeting as “positive and reassuring,” leaders from Karbi organisations welcomed the state government’s commitment to addressing both immediate security concerns and long-term development in the border region.

“The overall development of the tribes of Assam is a priority for us,” Sarma said after meeting representatives of Karbi and Adivasi communities. “We are committed to ensuring their growth and solving their long-pending issues. Our rich and diverse cultures bind us together like a family.”

The delegation that met the Chief Minister included representatives from the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA), Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS), Karbi Youth Association (KYA), Karbi Farmers Association (KFA), Karbi Unemployed Youth Association (KUYA), Karbi Students’ & Youth Council (KSYC) and the Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum (KAWJF).
