SHILLONG, SEP 8: Suspended legislator of the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum has expressed his discontent in the Assembly regarding his suspension.
Nongrum, who represents the North Shillong constituency, questioned why he was being sidelined despite being a VPP MLA.
The MLA was suspended on March 24, 2025 for alleged anti-party activities.
During the first day of the Assembly’s autumn session on Monday, Nongrum attempted to raise a point of order saying “May I seek clarification why myself being VPP MLA be in this position. Why are you putting me in the back seat.”
When Speaker Thomas A Sangma asked under which rule he had raised it, Nongrum clarified that he had not raised a point of order but instead sought clarification on his suspension.
He argued that his suspension was “purely illegal” and stated, “They (VPP) did not refer to me as MLA of North Shillong (in their letter of suspension) but (instead) they referred to me as Adelbert Nongrum, Shillong.”
To this, the Speaker has assured to look into the matter.
“The matter will be discussed later in my chamber,” Sangma said while indicating that it was not the appropriate time to discuss it in the House.
