Saikul, Sept 9: The Kuki Inpi and civil society organisations of Saikul have sought a clarification from the government over a reported raid on a designated Suspension of Operations camp at Gampum in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
The raid was reportedly conducted early on September 7. A combined team of CRPF CoBRA, RAF, Manipur Police and women security personnel allegedly took part in the operation.
The organisations claimed that several cadres were detained. A large cache of arms and ammunition was also reportedly recovered.
In a statement, the groups questioned the legal basis and purpose of the raid. They asked whether any alleged violation of the SoO ground rules had first been discussed by the Joint Monitoring Group.
The groups also accused the security personnel of using excessive force during the operation. However, there was no immediate official response to the allegations.
The SoO is a tripartite agreement involving the Centre, the Manipur government and Kuki militant groups. It was signed in 2008 to facilitate peace talks and work towards a political settlement.
The Kuki bodies claimed the camp had remained functional since the agreement was signed. They rejected allegations linking all SoO cadres to the violence in Manipur.
They urged the government to ensure a transparent investigation into the detentions and recovery of weapons.
The organisations also called for equal application of the law. They said decisions should be based on evidence and established procedures.
